Woo Hoo! What a great day! Ormond Tri-Y
Had a great race today. Im still really weak on the run I just can't push it too hard and I think Im beginning to feel similar pain in my left knee...may need to look into different shoes. I found my bike, while probably the fastest race split I've had yet, I have an endurance limiter towards the end and really started to fatigue. Considering I've done little to no anaerobic work I still felt really good.
I have one small complaint however....When the swim started the extra velcro on the timing chip came loose. Afraid to lose it I put it in my shorts. I figured so long as it was on my person I would still be timed....I was wrong. Stupid mistake. Anyway, this cost me 3rd place in my age group however when they put my time at 1:05:12 I do have a picture of me crossing at 1:04:49....6 seconds faster than 3rd place of 10 in my age group. Such is life.
The folks who put on this race at Altavista Sports also put on many other races in this area and are really dedicated to the active lifestyle. They really make events feel like a family atmosphere.
Was really a great day and Im so glad to be back to racing...even if its only the sprints. I absolutely enjoy the competition...I never thought of myself as much of a competitive person but since getting into triathlon even if Im only a MOP'er it still creates great drive..I can't do the feeling justice with words.Sean Mayhew

Return to Racing
Even if its only a sprint distance (I remember when sprints were a huge accomplishment...See Fat MeHere ->). I'll be at the Ormond Beach Tri Y this weekend coincidentally this was my first race ever as mentioned in previous posts so its kind of always going to be 'My Race'.
Right now Im fighting the temptation to do too much too soon. Im dying to crack open Training Plans for Multisport Athletes and jump right back into the Half-Ironman plan. This obviously is not going to happen and is without question the thoughts of some deranged madman. Currently Im doing all 3 sports really slowly, not that I was ever fast, but everything right now is LSD (long slow distance). I have done NO anaerobic workouts. Although I have borderlined on a few brick workouts.
With my current stretching program I am able to manage the tightness in the ITB and last night ran 45 minutes in HRZ's 1-2 with only a stop for a 1 minute stretch towards the end and then finishing with my full stretching routine and ice afterwards). In the back of my mind its still annoying that 45 minutes is now my "Long" run but just little bits at a time. The rule of 10% in full effect. My long bike now is about two hours and long swim is about 30 minute or 1600yds.
My last race time for this race was 1:13, which actually turned out to be kind of a slow time for me, however Im guessing a 22:38 5k might take a considerable jump this time around. Im also a bit overweight now as Im just getting back to training. Wish me luck.

Progress ... Seriously this time!
I have accidentally discovered that I run somewhat pigeon toed. When I make a conscience effort to point my toes forward while running I am able to run much farther with much less discomfort. Something that also seems to help is running with, not against, traffic when running on crowned roads. In fact I had 3 runs this week..One a 5k (crowned road) the next 2.5 (sidewalk) and Friday night (road/sidewalk) 5 miles! PAIN FREE! While I still feel the "pulling" (translated: I don't know how else to describe this other than pulling. I don't know what it is and in every knee anatomy photo I've seen Im unable to identify the spot where most the pain occurs other than the upper condyle (sp-definition?) of the tibia where there appears to be no moving parts.)....again While I still feel the pulling the pain seems to subside or I am able to keep it at bay using the changed running form. This morning I did a 26 mile ride followed by a 2 mile run...finished...iced it...No pain! Still pulling but no pain.
Im keeping my fingers crossed that I can maintain this over the next week and if it holds Im going to finally sign up for a race the Ormond Beach Tri-Y, a sprint, on May 29th. The first race I ever did so it has alot of sentimental value....

MethylPREDNISolone = Better Off Dead
The ortho has given me methyprednisolone some sort of oral Cortisone. This stuff makes me nauseous. Day one I was straight sweaty..hot flashes all day. Day two nauseous. I've felt like I wanted to puke all day. Luckily its kind of a rainy overcast day so its not such a bad day to hang out around the house and watch "Better Off Dead" for the gagillionth time.
Knee feels exactly the same I still dont understand how they can say nothing is mechanically wrong when I've had a lot of down time and while there is no pain there is still that 'pulling' feeling. Anyway, 6 days of Methyl. and 10 day wait afterwards and I call the ortho back. If there is no change hes going to refer me to a different doc in their facility. I was bummed this morning went to get some bananas for our sick little girl and I passed one guy on a bike with aero bars and saw a woman running with a fuel belt. Lucky bastards.
Im only 27 years old! Do you have any idea how many people my age and younger would PREFER to sit around all weekend and watch TV?! Alot! I used to be one of them! Now Im not one of THEM and this freaking dysfunctional knee has me sitting home wondering if the paper boy in "Better Off Dead" could have caught Lane if he had a set of aero bars and some speedplays. I bet then he would have got him some $2. He does have some pretty good form though when he's climbing the hill at the beginning of the movie. :)
EDIT: Yes, I am aware the Ironman Worlds are on today but Im kind of in Nina Krafts camp today.... I just can't bare to watch. Of course my reason for not watching is far different than hers. I have it in the DVR though so when Im back at it I will watch.Sean Mayhew
