Florida's Great Escape - Nasty Weather Beautiful Day

Obviously because of the knee I've dropped almost all of my races this year. However, knowing the 1.5 mile swim was the most challenging portion of this race I elected to keep it on the schedule and get Brent to do the bike and run for me. Anytime I can get an open water group swim I'll take it.

The swim was in Lake Louisa which was surprisingly a burnt orange/black. Visibility under water had to be about a foot I swallowed quite a bit of water on the way out as there was just a slight chop but for the most part the swim went great! I felt great the entire time although at 1.5 miles about 3/4 of the way through I actually became almost bored just wanting to get it over with. Time: 47:26

Turns out Brent didn't want to do the bike so basically on no training, having not ridden in about 5-7 weeks, I wore a knee brace and did the bike and somehow still managed to pull out a 20mph average over the 18 miles on little rollie pollie hills. With, thankfully, no knee pain. I think the brace probably helps with the patellar tracking issues. Why they, doctor or pt, didn't suggest this to me before is beyond me but the clicking pain that is typically associated with my riding as of late was non-existent.

Brent ran the 8 miles in about 1:12 which was a great pace for him.

It rained the entire day and everything was soaking wet but it was a great time. We were 4th of 4 relay teams and I mean we were 4th for EVERYTHING but considering we mostly treated it as training day, walking through transitions etc., Im glad I kept this race and will definitely be back next year. Hopefully with a knee :)

Withdrawal from Florida Half-Ironman and others

I went ahead and withdrew from this race today and got a whopping $75 back. Im thinking this will be the last m-dot race I sign up for until I know for sure whether or not my body can handle the training as their withdrawal policy just sucks. I would rather have just transferred the fees to next year than lost $200.

I will probably be transferring the St. Anthony's fees with the $25 charge later this week. This will officially clear my schedule as the knee even with ZERO running in the last week, I mean a complete break no running no cycling and minimal swimming, only feels worse. The cold weather seems to bother it. Clearing the schedule completely removes the stress of feeling like I HAVE to train.

If anyone knows of a good distance athlete doctor in the Orlando or Jacksonville area please drop me an email as I feel dissatisfied with the progress and results of my previous treatment. 6 Ibuprofen a day seems like a band-aid and I have concern of the side effects to my stomach.

Why I love swimming

Because its the only thing I can do that does not result in pain in my knee. I have a list of swim workouts I should have been doing to get back into shape but frankly I couldn't stand all the organization right now. Mentally the thought of structured training for swimming and cycling without the running is kind of like being a "Q without a u".

So, for the past week I've been to the pool nearly every day sometimes twice and am back up to a long slow distance swim of 45 minutes. The PT told me I could also try aquajogging but after a long swim workout something about that motion just ate my legs up so I will try again this weekend.

Went to Ortho yesterday who basically said give it 6-8 weeks MORE and if its not better it would then be time to consider cortisone. I told him look I have a Half-Ironman in May two months is too far off to start running to which he bascially responded 'oh well'.Sean Mayhew

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Running is not improving I can only run about 15 minutes before the pain starts. Its also been about six weeks since I last swam because the gym membership expired and with the knee pain I didnt want to spend $500 to find out swimming hurts too. I sucked it up and signed up this week only to find that when I quit 6 weeks ago I was swimming 3,200 non-stop now I can only swim sets of 500 for a total of about 1,200. I know this will come back and completely expected the loss of fitness but it is discouraging.

Im beginning to think I should give up on the just PT aspect of recovery and ask for cortisone. Now over a month this is taking too long.

I also have now switched to Dunkin Donuts coffee (JUST COFFEE NO DONUTS) because Starbucks saw fit to start printing political messages on my coffee cup. Ahhh DD, coffee without the propoganda.Sean Mayhew
