Florida's Great Escape - Nasty Weather Beautiful Day
Obviously because of the knee I've dropped almost all of my races this year. However, knowing the 1.5 mile swim was the most challenging portion of this race I elected to keep it on the schedule and get Brent to do the bike and run for me. Anytime I can get an open water group swim I'll take it.
The swim was in Lake Louisa which was surprisingly a burnt orange/black. Visibility under water had to be about a foot I swallowed quite a bit of water on the way out as there was just a slight chop but for the most part the swim went great! I felt great the entire time although at 1.5 miles about 3/4 of the way through I actually became almost bored just wanting to get it over with. Time: 47:26
Turns out Brent didn't want to do the bike so basically on no training, having not ridden in about 5-7 weeks, I wore a knee brace and did the bike and somehow still managed to pull out a 20mph average over the 18 miles on little rollie pollie hills. With, thankfully, no knee pain. I think the brace probably helps with the patellar tracking issues. Why they, doctor or pt, didn't suggest this to me before is beyond me but the clicking pain that is typically associated with my riding as of late was non-existent.
Brent ran the 8 miles in about 1:12 which was a great pace for him.
It rained the entire day and everything was soaking wet but it was a great time. We were 4th of 4 relay teams and I mean we were 4th for EVERYTHING but considering we mostly treated it as training day, walking through transitions etc., Im glad I kept this race and will definitely be back next year. Hopefully with a knee :)
