Doc says meniscus tear and/or tendonitis

I couldn't wait for the 12th to get into a doc. Not getting into a doc until the 12 meant not getting to a physical therapist until the end of the month. So I did the next best thing and went to an urgent care. Urgent?! Four hours later the doc says probably a meniscus tear and/or cartilage damage. Not season ending but not what I wanted to hear. He gave me a prescription to a physical therapist and I made an appointment for Tuesday the 4th. Perfect. Much better than late in the month. He also gave me pain meds for a sore foot that showed up two days after the half-marry. Perhaps a stress fracture on the bottom outside of my right foot probably from overcompensating for the sore knee according to the doc.

Note: I went back into my logs and found the last hard workout I did BEFORE the run(11/27) that the pain started was a big chain ring Spinervals No Slackers DVD(11/26). My Training Bible workout for the bike was 45 minutes "Ride on rolling course. Big chain ring. Most of ride time in heart rate zone2-3. Seated on most hills." so I inserted the Spinervals DVD. The TB workout for the run was 1 hour "Heart rate in zones 1-2 on a gently rolling course. Check cadence: count left foot strikes 15 seconds. Goal is 21 plus."I also had two MS strength workouts that week.

DeLeon Springs Half Marathon

I figured what better way to keep my Christmas eating in check than to sign up for a half-marathon the day after.

All I'm going to say is it was 42-Degrees, raining and windy. In Florida with the exception of a hurricane it was the worst weather possible. The whole way out was against the wind but the way back was a dream. I had a great day! Blew my legs up a little bit. I'm still having a problem with what I believe is ITBS (iliotibial band syndrome). Despite the pain and the wobbles the last two miles everything went according to plan. I went in wanting to do 1:45 and hit 1:44. Placed second in my age group, of three ;).

I used something I read on Gordo's site in his half-ironman thoughts for the run. I took it slow at the start. Avoided pushing the pace and letting a competitive spirit talk me into chasing those who took off as I knew those really good runners and elites pace would mean walking for me by the 3rd mile. Im just a mop'er as it is but I find myself extremely interested in learning to break races down into parts and having a strategy other than finish but rather finish in a planned time. I figured late in the run would be my time to run hard. I went a little too hard too early another runner caught me at mile 8 we chatted a bit and I thought I could pace with him. He backed off the pace and I kept going. Mile 11 I fatigued and he blew by me. Lesson learned.

I have an appointment with the doc on January 12th for the knee issue. I hate insurance I know I need a physical therapist but can't get into one without a script from a primary physician.

Freelance trip to Thailand

EDIT: This obviously was not to be and our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been effected by the tsunami disaster. Please give to the American Red Cross

All right folks upon reading of this gentlemans triathlon in Laguna Phuket, Thailand I've determined that I must go to the November 2005 event.

The only way this is going to happen is to work an extra job to come up with the $3000+ I need to get myself and my lovely wife there. Therefore I've taken to doing free lance on my nights and weekends (any time I'm not training or playing with our adorable child) and will perform just about any odd job (graphically speaking) to do it. So if you need anything a logo a flyer a poster a brochure a web site a postcard a wedding invitation a sign to tell the hairy neighbor to stop stealing your newspaper whatever. I can do it. Cheap!

You can visit my freelance site at http://www.heliocreative.com. Thanks.

The FREE iPod Offer

From what I understand this is real. I've read several places around the net this is real including Wired magazine. Im a little skeptical but what do I care I got some rentals from Blockbuster I would have paid for anyway. http://www.freeiPods.com/?r=12898929

Here is the Wired article http://www.wired.com/news/mac/0,2125,64614,00.html

I forgot to mention EnduranceRadio.com

I won a Zoot Sports Triathlon bag in November from Tim over at EnduranceRadio.com! A $130 value and for anybody who knows me I am for the most part extremely frugal this would almost be considered a major purchase ;) thanks Tim! For those age groupers out there who've never listened give a listen as he always has insightful interviews with some of the more interesting folks in our sport. To date my two favorite interviews, as I have learned a lot from their writing have been Gale Bernhardt author of Training Plans for Multisport athletes and Brian Shea owner of Personal Best Nutrition.Sean Mayhew

All your 'Base' are belong to us

Okay, that title has nothing to do with triathlon but I couldn't resist ;) I’m in the 'Base' period of my training right now which means I have been pretty busy the last couple weeks and this week is recovery. So what does this all mean? It means I did my first ever 4-hour ride yesterday a whopping 73 miles. My goal for this year is to complete all of my workouts. In looking over my training from last year there were only a handful of weeks I did every workout in the amount of time allotted. For the most part every workout was cut short or skipped for one reason or another. To date in my 2005 ATP I've done every workout and have either done the exact amount of time or a little extra and I feel great. I've also done a good job of sticking to my strength program although Im nowhere near my squat goal of 400 pounds. I haven't been able to get past 205. Triathlon is not a hobby its a way of life. Although I am looking forward to this rest week.

I have had a few problems with running and my right knee acting up so I've tried to limit the pain by running on a treadmill. This only happens in runs lasting more than about an hour the pain following is pretty intense making it difficult to walk and then a day later its gone. It may be ITBS or something of that nature. This is of course my own self diagnosis and so far to treat it I've bought new shoes (same as the old shoes that had 400+ miles) and adjusted the tension on my clipless pedals. If it doesn't get better soon I will be at the doc. I have a recovery week this week therefore there will be no runs of more than an hour until NEXT Friday December 17th. Keeping my fingers crossed the rest week will make it go away.

Oh..just in case you don't get the "All your base are belong to us" reference go here.Sean Mayhew
