Ironman is Euphoria
I lived! Im not going to get into a big long post about how my day went as there are some things that can't be explained and that you'll just have to experience to understand. Took the day a lot easier than I wish I would have. Went 14:12 and had plenty of juice with a smile at the end. Having done this I feel like I can accomplish anything its amazing and if I can do it YOU CAN TOO!
Im going to do mostly short course races next year. Sprints, Olympics and just maybe a Half-IM or two. I am signed up for the ING Miami Marathon in January with my next triathlon being St. Anthony's in April. I have thoughts of perhaps doing another Ironman in Lake Placid in 2007 but having now done the long course I really prefer the training and the price of shorter courses. If someone offered me free admission to another iron distance I'd take it but the fees basically break down to 1 IM = 5 sprint or 3 olympic races.
I've taken this passed week off completely to give my body time to heal as I felt pretty exhausted earlier in the week. Will spend some time on an elliptical machine this week and start weight lifting before beginning marathon training either next week or the week after.
Postscript: One last comment on the Iron distance and my comments that If I can do it you can too. I found that this distance is more about persistence and commitment to getting the work done than it is about physical ability. There is a lot of truth to the saying 'Its more mental than physical'. I always make it a point to say that Im not blessed with a lot of the physical gifts: fast legs, ultra trim physique, injury free knees. That many of the top age groupers seem to have been born with. This is why I am my own barometer. Off to get my tat.. I earned it.
